To render the final scene I used vray as a render engine in 3K of resolution after 6 hours.
I have adopted the universal settings parameters in order to obtain an
high quality image.
Finally I came to the final step of this incredible challenge, post-production.
To do this, I will use photoshop and I’ ll follow a non-destructive workflow.
The process of working will be composed in 3 phases:
A – compositing: in which I will combine the beauty pass together with the exr render elements and the masks
of the different parts of the project created appropriately through the tool id tool,
B – add props: in this phase I will add some elements like vegetation, people.
C – finalize: the final phase will include the addition of fx as dof, haze and then conclude
with the color grading.

I just finished the facade material, i first tried doing it with procedural texturing but i didn’t liked the end result so i turned to traditional UV method where i used photo references to replicate the panels exactly as they are in the building, some of them were photobashed and some of them were painted by hand using a wacom tablet.
Most of the other materials in the scene are still being worked on, specially the vines which still requires a lot of work.

Thank you Ronan and the Tomorrow team for organising this challenge. We are a team of two artists and designers and we are happy to join!

For getting a better understanding of the building we first studied the provided images and we used Google earth to get an idea of the environment. We then set up different cameras with overview and close up perspectives inside the 3d model. We also tried out different moods for the daylight with the warmth of a summer evening in mind.

Finally, we decided to focus on the perspective of an alley, looking towards a small plaza nearby. This will be the central part of our composition. We are interested in the interaction between the interior and the exterior of the building, not only structural, but also regarding the different moods of light; the warm sun-light on the outside and the cool artificial light from the light tubes inside the building.
We decided to change the material of the façade design, using panels of dark anodised aluminium. In our opinion its simple and elegant appearance creates a better contrast to the crackly brick walls and the nice patina on the surrounding old buildings.

The scenery will show an early mild summer evening. Students use the quiet time for working on their projects inside the building, whilst others walk along the alley towards the summer evening…

The final render in 5K resolution took about 4 hours.

The workflow for post-production will be :

1. Adding Render Passes with various adjustments/color grading.

2. Adding people with light activities going around.

3. The mood I choose for this image is after rain.Darken the front of the image and will add Zdepth to create depth and maybe mist effect on the glass.

Working on detailing the exterior environment before i can get to do the interior.
So this progress looks at how the interior and some exterior artificial lighting balances out with the natural dusk general light.
There’s still a couple of areas that might need some artificial light so will get going on that.
