just an update showing my final composition and a few screengrab of some material I’ve done.. I will post the final image soon
A really cool thing about archviz is that you can take a photograph of impossible things.
Something I like very much is to look at old photos of places and buildings I come across daily and realize how a different context can have such an impact on the same object. I want to do a little trick here and it is to translate the building not only to a different place, but to a different era. And of course, as much is I love it, this era could not be other than the 1930’s. As if the restaurant and museum were built at the same time (but still by different architects 😉
My references are going to be about the place (I imagine the buildings sitting in the middle of nowhere, tangent to a road in the edge of a pine forest) and also about the ambientation, something that really helps me and is a fun way to get references is watching movies.
I do not remember how many times I have seen one of my favourite movies: “Road to perdition”. Guys, if you have not seen this masterpiece I suggest you do it. This movie is based on a comic that has the same name. Oustanding photography and memorable soundtrack. You will not regret!
I intend to get the postrproduction assets directly from scenes of this movie and others such as “The untouchables”
Speaking of workflow, I usually model some very basic shapes and move my camera around to explore posible compositions. Once I have some, I sketch them by hand so I can start to draw stuff like vegetation, people or surroundings very quickly. Then, I choose my favourite and complete the sketch experimenting with the light. This can be seen as time wasting, but it really helps me to have some kind of preview of what I’m trying to achieve. Of course it also means that I know exactly which parts of the project need to be modelled and which don’t.
Odds are that I start modelling tomorrow. I basically work on this when I have a few hours after work, but mainly in the weekends. I intend to upload a “modelling update” by Monday.
Watch the movie! Seriously!
Hi! I have been busy with my regular works for a while and finally got some time to prepare my concept submission.
So here is my concept idea;
The building gives me the feeling of a monumental structure with its architectural design so to emphasize the building I thought about setting up the scene by placing the building into a fresh snow atmosphere with a foggy background.
I already set up my camera angle and made some conceptual placement of the environment trees. I have done some simple material assignments to feel the final look as much as I can on the viewport and I captured a screenshot that I uploaded for concept submission.
I chose a long focal length to see the facade larger and less environment. I placed the corner of the building just in the middle of my frame and equally distributed the 2 facades of the building in the image by the idea of monumental representation.
The angle, focal length and placement of the building will remain same until the final work but I will be working on environment about the placement of the trees and creating the ground shaped with snowfall. The trees will be placed from camera point to building close to far to have depth and I am planing to use DOF effect.
I want to do some CGI work for the effect of snow on the cladding and the windows as much as the warm living interior let the snow remain on it. Some references are on the inspiration image. The interior will be seen with warm atmosphere to give the feeling of a cosy place just in the middle of land covered with snow and inside of a fog. We will be seeing someone’s trace on the walkway and enterance the building as the warm feeling will be seen coming out from the opening of door.
I will try to update regularly from now on till final deadline.
Good luck to everyone!
When i first saw this competition and the building I thought, what a great opportunity to make something different.
In my student exchange experience in Sweden i still remember the really nice and clear autumn days. But i also always appreciated the moods of the rainy and foggy days, with its warm lights breaking through the mystic haze.
My goal is, to capture the appeal of this mood and translate it in the picture.
