The 7th Architectural Visualization Challenge I’m running in partnership with Quixel as the marquee sponsor. The book CABINS by Philip Jodidio and the fantastic illustrations by Marie-Laure Cruschi served as the principal inspiration for this year’s challenge theme. That, and my love for prefab architecture design.

I started with a mood board to get a rough idea of colours, composition, landscape and general lighting. The location at the moment is the tea farms of Malaysia’s Cameron highland. The end goal is to create a VR experience of a warm morning sunrise whilst showcasing the views of the cabins.

My aim for this project is to create environment in which a self sustaining cabin can act as a place of refuge from the “structured” Concrete Jungle known as civilization. The environment that I aim to capture is a small cove on the outskirts of a tropical jungle. Time of day is set to be a sunny 10’o clock movie that calls for a quick morning surf and fruit-bowl breakfast straight after.

This is a very loose concept sketch made with charcoal and stump, I like to work with this media in the early stages of design as it stimulates different parts of my creativity and makes me see things I would not have seen while working in 3D. Drawing the concept several times gets me closer to the proportions I want and lets me try out things until I achieve visual balance.
I am wanting the story to be a big part of this Challenge and thus will start with some keywords: Fire, sauna, canoe, beach, fishing, swimming, skiing, hunting, remote, owners hands on involvement in project.
The location is still not decided upon but I am thinking of northern Minnesota in the vicinity of Ely. My ideal site is a place accessible only through hiking, skiing, snowmobiling or canoeing, and thus creating a healthy challenge in the construction phase. I will go to sleep tonight with a wide grin thinking about traveling in a canoe on small lakes connected via portages to a sweet cabin.
I am looking forward to playing with all of you.
Best
Lars

My initial thoughts where sparked by Ronens first concepts – which I loved his approach and I spent probably 5-6 days at 6 hours a day looking at areas and cabins on the internet – after many bookmarks and constantly looking over a folder with many downloaded images I decided on something similar to “Big Cabin Little Cabin” from Renée del Gaudio Architecture. The cabin is the one I connect with the most and would fit in Perth really well. Also the images sparked many ideas for landscape, and here in Perth are many amazing landscapes. I plan on capturing many of my own assets using Photoscan and this gives me a great opportunity to do that.

The main idea here is to create a believable village within these set of mountains. It provides a unique opportunity to connect these, otherwise, solitary rock formations into cohesive living mini village of cabins.

When I heard about the challenge of “Cabins” for the first time, I remembered the great work of art “A-Z West” by the artist Andrea Zittel.
Her ‘Experimental Living Cabins’ are installed at Joshua Tree National Park in Southern California. The work deals with all aspects of daily life. The design of the prefabricated cabins represents the minimum of what is needed to provide shelter. Visitors can stay in a cabin for up to several weeks to experience the amazing desert environment.

For the challenge, my idea is to translate Zittel’s social artwork into a virtual 3D experience. It’s going to be quite a journey … and I’m looking forward to it!
