The 7th Architectural Visualization Challenge I’m running in partnership with Quixel as the marquee sponsor. The book CABINS by Philip Jodidio and the fantastic illustrations by Marie-Laure Cruschi served as the principal inspiration for this year’s challenge theme. That, and my love for prefab architecture design.

I am very interested with the sinkhole events that happen particularly within the Dead Sea area (Dead Sea is an inland lake that sits on the border between Israel and Jordan), this cabin has a purpose for a geologist who is carrying out research for her work and her lover who is away from her trying to propose to her in an unconventional way.

I knew fromt the start of the challenge that I wanted to do something with water. I used an hour to find some reference of beautiful water locations and when I thaught about a cabin I remembered having seen a Swedish cabin which I found stunning. My idea is to combine these two elements – and showcase the beauty of solitude.

The place where no time…
Not so long ago I’ve visited Tasmania for a few weeks. It’s northern island state in Australia. And I definitely was really inspired by virgin nature around me. Of course place in the sketch isn’t real and I hyperbolized a bit my memories.

What can be better place for the Cabin of the last Romantic as endless shallow. Low tide carried water away and you are able walk in the middle of infinity, between two mirrored worlds. Energy by the wind, food by the sea, rules by the universe.

01. Everything I do has to have a story. A story usually has a beginning, middle and end. Finding the right shapes and patterns is my beginning.

I find that the best way to create something timeless and something that works. It is to dissect the environment into simple shapes and patterns. Interesting things start to happen with the imagination when you look at the material and placement of the surrounding nature and reason why something should be where it is and thus find the best shape for the centrepiece. In this case the CABIN.

Place where no time…
The first ideas creates as usual on the paper, first line, first shapes, first direction. The subject is simple. Cabin of the last romantic. Person who can easily live without prejudice, jealousy and any rules.
So I started with small sketches of future image, very quick, just for fun. I did some variations of landscape and cabin design. After few second I already had in my mind clear vision of location where it should be. All this process pushed me to the new forms and ideas which I’ll try to explain in my next post.

This impression I’ve got from the Tongariro volcanic park in New Zealand. I started my crossing early in the morning while clouds were covering most of the land surface. Seeing almost nothing in 100 m max I was moving through the valleys and climbing huge lava stones looks like a blood pudding pieces. On the top of Red crater incredible wind blew the clouds faster so suddenly it dawns and then I saw the view. I was standing on the blackened edge of the crater which was literally red in the hollow as if it was bleeding once and now thickens. On the other side and after it the charred valley spread to the horizon. The flanks were covered with sends and stones of all possible ground colors golden red-orange and some lemon yellow spots were steaming boiling mud pools. It was a feeling that there was a nature workshop where all kinds of the landscape are created but right now just a naked bare land as it was. There was a beginning. That’s how it looks millions of years ago.

I spend several hours there. I wish to stay longer.
Walking around, watching and gathering all colourful stones and lava pumice, guessing the chemicals, it was easy to imagine whatever you can.
Imagine a monolith piece of golden metal thrown out from the bowels of the earth and stuck on the edge. Clouds or steam rambled through the lava valley. There was an inception.
