The 7th Architectural Visualization Challenge I’m running in partnership with Quixel as the marquee sponsor. The book CABINS by Philip Jodidio and the fantastic illustrations by Marie-Laure Cruschi served as the principal inspiration for this year’s challenge theme. That, and my love for prefab architecture design.

I was having problems trying to think of how to model the environment. I finally came up with the idea of using sandbox plugin in Sketchup as a base. I then created a hexagon that I copied an instance of. I picked the hexagons randomly using randomSelect, grouped them, and dropped them on the sandbox model, this I repeated a number of times, each time I tweeked the sandbox model to get a random height for the hexagons upon the sandbox model.
Now that I have this model I will start designing the cabin… hopefully.

I just knew, the synonyms for cabins includes the words amongst others includes shanty shack, shed, bothy, shieling, shiel, but and ben; cabana; tilt; mia-mia, gunyah, humpy; whare; hok; archaiccot; archaicshebang. quite funny no?
That aside, my concept derives and inspired by the architecture of thom mayne of morphosis architect and wes jones architect. whilst mostly inspired by the latter architecture and small habitat design.

” how robotics or hi tech the cabins is today will become primitive tomorrow rite? ” :
the proposal consist of a mix between raw materialism, hi tech materials and deconstructivsm. The word primitive and robotics is the biggest narratives here as the cabins is an ever evolving, adapting to its surrounding and environment, adding new or old, nature/raw materials to its constructions, expansions and adaptability to the site , perhaps redefining a new semiotics for how a cabin habitat evolves.

Site context may take the ethereal landscapes of the north such as Tromso, Lofoten or even iceland.

We use to see high level technology and special high end materials, sterile stuffs,etc.. when it’s about space travel and colonies on Mars. All of this is so disconnected to our reality, that it’s a bit scary I Think. Why ? Because we are definitely attached to our home called Earth, attached to The trees, the lakes, seas, wind, wood,etc..
My goal is to create a paradoxal picture combining the subject of the challenge : A cabin , which i imagine to be in wood, some Earth vegetation in the planet Mars environment. It’s a kind of transposition of the earthly life on Mars because, Finally it’s the human fatality: We would be ready to leave the earth but never without taking away some of it !
