I took inspiration from someone blowing into cupped hands to keep warm in the cold. The idea led to a focus on creating a space that provided warmth within a cool surrounding without separating the experience of being in the environment.

Spent the last couple of days finishing up the foliage library and scatter tool, UI still a bit clunky but it’s functional at least! I used Houdini to generate the height map for the terrain using a rough sculpt as a base. Done with the animatic so I now have a pretty good idea of the angles I want to cover

I always try to start a project by exploring it in section, trying to capture a particular spacial experience. The A-frame cabin became a natural starting point as the typology has always fascinated me and offers a playful variation on the pitched roof.
While there are exhaustive precedents online it is always nice to start with printed media – my instant go to was the fantastic collection by Cabin Porn that has been a great source of inspiration both visually and through story-telling. I also came upon the Bennati Cabin by Rudolph Schindler, a classic example of the A-frame in LTL’s Manual of Section (a must have for any architecture student).
My next step is to start defining the cabin and making quick decisions before selecting a location and creating a compelling story behind it all.
