Night in Mon Kou

July 13, 2017 / in 3dsmax, Photoshop, V-Ray / by Neighbourhood CG Team

This project is set on a rainy night in an imagined Hong Kong inspired back street.

Photographers and film makers such as Wang ka-wai, Todd Hido, Christophe Jacrot and Ridley Scott inspired this work, especially looking into how they use contrasting warm and cold light with weather to capture a sense of mood and emotion

Morning Walk

I started with a simple concept of a man walking back to his house in the woods after the morning walk with the dogs. And collected 3-4 reference images to begin work from – of the style of woods I wanted, of the building & the figure/dogs.

I wanted to try out Megascans materials and objects for the first time and include some dogs (they’re old low poly models, but I couldn’t find any newer high polys that were running). As well as render the image on one machine with Corona, with the aim of testing the boundaries of features that I would usually avoid in Vray – such as displacement on most objects, global fog, large amount of scattered objects & in camera Depth of Field.

The brief was to express elegance and a sense of grandeur.

The early evening invokes the potential of the night ahead, and coupled with the model’s glamourous attire, this creates a sense of anticipation. She looks down at the city below from the high window, contemplating her night at the most important event of the year. The champagne and pomegranate on the table in the foreground speak of a sophisticated and refined palette.

Imbuing an image with a simple narrative in this way can really help to enhance what is a fairly simple scene. We can try to question the spaces we are dressing and the motives of the people who will come to inhabit them. Who will live here? What are their aspirations? What is their story, and how can we best tell it through the images we craft?
